Good night for Irene
Review by Kerr McKinlay

They're a versatile lot, the Musselburgh Amateur Musical Assocciation. But after tackling such in-your-face productions as Oklahoma! and Anything Goes in recent years, this latest production, Hugh Wheeler and Joseph Stein's Irene is, by contrast, positively genteel.

It's a colourful, nostalgig reminder of a bygone era as Irene O'Dare, a feisty Irish-American colleen helps her mum in a piano shop on New York's 9th Avenue. When our go-ahead gal accidentally breaks in Long Island's snooty society - falling in love en route - it's not exactly difficult to predict a romantic happy ending.

We're Getting Away With It

This was an extremely well dressed show, boasting sumptious sets and a barrowload of songs with "What do you want to make those eyes at me for", You made me love you" and "Alice Blue Gown" pick of the bunch.

The vivacious Kerry Anne Rae excelled as the eponymous shopgirl who makes it big.

In a large cast, Robert Crawford camped it up hillariously as "Madama Lucy" and there was a scene stealing preformance from Audrey Dixon as Irene's mum.
Judging by the audiences enthusiastic ovation at Thursday's final curtain it was an enjoyably good night for Irene.
